Fitness consequences of helping behavior in the western bluebird 总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1
We examined the fitness consequences of helping behavior inthe western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) at Hastings Reservationin Carmel Valley, California, USA, and tested hypotheses forhow helpers benefit from engaging in alloparental behavior.Both juvenile and adult western bluebirds occasionally helpat the nest During a 12 year period, all adult helpers and mostjuvenile helpers were male. Helpers usually fed at nests ofboth their parents and rarely helped when only one parent waspresent. The frequency of pairs with adult helpers was only7%, but nearly one-third of adult males helped among those withboth parents on the study area. At least 28% were breeders whosenests failed. The propensity to help appears to depend uponparental survival, male philopatry, and the breeding successof potential helpers. Feeding rates were not increased at nestswith juvenile helpers, apparendy because breeding males reducedtheir feeding rates. In contrast, adult helpers increased theoverall rates of food delivery to the nest in spite of a reductionin the number of feeding trips made by both male and femaleparents. Helpers did not derive any obvious direct fitness benefitsfrom helping, but they had greater indirect fitness than nonhelpersdue to increases in nestling growth rates and fledging successat their parents' nests. Helpers fledged fewer offspring intheir first nests than did nonhelpers, suggesting that theywere birds with reduced reproductive potential. Although wehave not yet measured the effect of extrapair fertilizationson the fitness benefits of helping, we calculated the differencein fitness between helpers and nonhelpers as a function of thepotential helper's paternity when breeding independently andhis father's paternity in the nest at which he might help. Inconjunction with constraints on breeding and indirect fitnessbenefits, we predict that relatedness of males to the youngin their own as well as their parents' nests will influencehelping behavior in western bluebirds. 相似文献

In Europe and North America the western flower thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis, is an important pest in various greenhouse crops, such as sweet pepper and cucumber. Two species of predatory mite are commercially
applied for biological control of this pest:Amblyseius cucumeris andA. barkeri. Thrips control is generally successful from March onwards. During winter, however, thrips control by these predatory mites
is less effective. An important reason for this is that the commercially applied strains of both mite species enter reproductive
diapause under short-day photoperiods, whereas the western flower thrips does not enter diapause. In this paper we report
on selection experiments for non-diapause in strains of both mite species, aimed at obtaining predators that do not enter
diapause under light- and temperature conditions prevailing in winter. Additional experiments were done to estimate the potential
of the selected lines as control agents ofF. occidentalis. Selection for non-diapause proved highly successful in both predatory mite species. In a New Zealand strain ofA. cucumeris diapause incidence decreased from 41% to 0% in about ten generations; in a Dutch strain ofA. barkeri diapause incidence decreased from 67% to 0% in about six generations. Furthermore, selection for non-diapause had no influence
on predator performance, measured as predation rate and oviposition rate on a diet of first instar thirps larvae. Rates of
predation and oviposition were the same for selected and unselected lines in both species; rates of predation and oviposition
were higher forA. cucumeris than forA. barkeri. After 18 months under non-diapause conditions, no less than 92% of a sample of the selected non-diapause line ofA. cucumeris did not enter diapause when tested under diapause-inducing conditions. This indicates that ‘non-diapause’ is a stable trait
in these predatory mites. Finally, a small-scale greenhouse experiment in a sweet pepper crop showed that the selected non-diapause

Floating marshes occur over 70% of the western Terrebonne Basin, Louisiana, USA, freshwater coastal wetlands. They are of several types: A free-floating thick-mat (45–60 cm) marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia; a thick mat marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia that floats part of the year, but whose vertical floating range is damped compared to adjacent water; and an irregularly-floating thin mat (< 30 cm) dominated by Eleocharis spp. in the spring and Ludwigia leptocarpa and Bidens laevis in the summer and fall. Floating mats must be almost entirely organic in order to be buoyant enough to float. The western Terrebonne wetlands receive large winter/spring supplies of suspended sediments from the Atchafalaya River. Even though sediment concentrations in the adjacent bayou are as high as 100 mg l–1, the Panicum hemitomon/Sagittaria lancifolia free-floating marsh probably receives no over-surface sediments since it floats continuously. The bulk density data of the damped-floating marsh, however, suggest some mineral sediment input, probably during winter when this marsh is submerged. These two types of floating marsh could not have developed in the present sediment regime of the Atchafalaya River, but as long as they remain floating can continue to exist. Thin floating mats are found in areas receiving the least sediment (<20 mg 1–1 suspended sediment concentration in adjacent bayous). This low sediment environment probably made possible their formation within the past 20 years. They may represent a transitional stage in mat succession from (1) existing thick-mat floating marsh to a degrading floating marsh, or (2) a floating marsh developing in shallow open water.Corresponding editor: D. 利用免疫印迹(WB)分析了水稻(Oryza sativa) OsPR10A在其不同生长时期、不同组织部位及多种非生物逆境胁迫下的表达特征, 发现OsPR10A在干旱、盐胁迫以及茉莉酸甲酯(MeJA)和脱落酸(ABA)诱导下表达量明显升高, 表明该蛋白可能在干旱和盐胁迫应答过程中发挥作用。为证明这一推测, 我们构建了OsPR10A超表达载体, 经农杆菌介导转化水稻, 获得超表达OsPR10A的纯合株系。田间表型观察表明, 转基因株系株高变矮、穗长变短、结实率降低。用20% PEG6000在水稻种子萌发过程中进行干旱处理, 结果显示, OsPR10A超表达株系的根长和芽长均显著高于野生型, 证明超表达OsPR10A可增强水稻萌发期耐旱性。该研究有助于增进人们对水稻OsPR10A功能的了解。 相似文献

The aim of the present study is to investigate the demographic structure and to identify some aspects of the biology of an
exploited population of Medorippe lanata (Brachyura: Dorippidae) in the eastern Ligurian Sea, western Mediterranean. 1364 specimens (639 males and 725 females) of
M. lanata were collected on a monthly basis from January to December 2001, in a wide area of the eastern Ligurian Sea usually exploited
by the Viareggio ‘rapido’ trawl fleet. M. lanata represented an important fraction of the discard, both in weight and in number of individuals. Maximum abundance of this
species occurred in late summer-early autumn (up to 3369 ind. km−2 and 50.6 kg km−2 in August). The overall females:males sex-ratio was 1.13:1, while the monthly sex-ratio did not differ statistically from
1:1 in all months, except in September and October, when females significantly outnumbered males. The sampled population was
composed of two cohorts from November to April. Sizes ranged from 10 to 29 mm carapace length (CL) for females and from 9
to 29 mm CL for males. The von Bertalanffy growth curve, computed for both sexes, gave a higher growth rate in males than
in females. Recently moulted males and females were observed throughout the year, except in summer, when the highest number
of ovigerous females was present. Females with external eggs were collected from March to November, with peaks in August and
September. The monthly evolution of the ovarian maturity stages showed no clear temporal trend. At 21 mm CL, 50% of females
were ovigerous or showed macroscopically mature ovaries. According to the dimorphism in chelae size, the presence of adult
males (post-puberty stage) was observed all year round, from 18 to 29 mm CL, without evident temporal trends. 相似文献

Aim We reconstructed the phylogeny of the lichen genus Nephroma (Peltigerales) to assess the relationships of species endemic to Macaronesia. We estimated dates of divergences to test the hypothesis that the species arose in Macaronesia (neo‐endemism) versus the oceanic archipelagos serving as refugia for formerly widespread taxa (palaeo‐endemism). Location Cosmopolitan with a special focus on the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Methods DNA sequences were obtained from 18 species for three loci and analysed using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences. Divergence dates were estimated for the internal transcribed spacer (ITS)‐based phylogeny using a relaxed molecular clock. Reconstruction of the ancestral geographical range was conducted using the Bayesian 50% majority rule consensus tree under a parsimony method. Results The backbone phylogenetic tree was fully supported, with Nephroma plumbeum as sister to all other species. Four strongly supported clades were detected: the Nephroma helveticum, the N. bellum, the N. laevigatum and the N. parile clades. The latter two share a common ancestor and each includes a widespread Holarctic species (N. laevigatum and N. parile, respectively) and all species endemic to Macaronesia. The data suggest a neo‐endemic origin of Macaronesian taxa, a recent range expansion from Macaronesia of both widespread species, a range expansion limited to the Mediteranean Basin and south‐western Europe for another taxon, and a long dispersal event that resulted in a speciation event in the western parts of North America. Main conclusions The Macaronesian endemic species belong to two sister clades and originated from a most recent common ancestor (MRCA) shared with one widely distributed taxon, either N. parile or N. laevigatum. Estimates of the mean divergence dates suggest that the endemics originated in the archipelagos after the rise of the volcanic islands, along with the ancestor to the now widespread species, which probably expanded their range beyond Macaronesia via long‐distance dispersal. This study provides the first phylogenetic evidence of Macaronesian neo‐endemism in lichenized fungi and provides support for the hypothesis that oceanic islands may serve as a source for the colonization of continents. However, further data are needed to properly assess the alternative hypothesis, namely colonization from western North America. 相似文献
